I often try a new show or two when the new season starts. This year I am trying four. "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" , "Shark", "Heroes" and "Brothers & Sisters" . All dramas, not a comedy among them. (I seriously got burned when I hitched my star to the Friends spin off "Joey" It never made it to season three.) I go by first impressions. They, I think, are critical to what the series is like. Its also slightly unfair cause I have seen the pilots to shows I love and found that they wouldnt have grabbed me at first so its an iffy practice. Last year I sampled only one new show "Criminal Minds". Depsite the appearance of Mandy Patinkin, Thomas Gibson and many others, this show never grabbed me. Its in its second season now. I have never watched beyond the first episode. So far I've seen two pilot episodes. One more is forthcoming on Monday. ( "Heroes" debuts before episode two of Studio 60).Brothers & Sisters is on Sunday night. A review of that will come in the same blog as "Heroes" I am posting my first impressions of the first two pilots I've seen now. Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip: In the first episode/pilot nothing much happened. Like in all first episodes the situaton was being set up. Next week I will be able to get more into it. Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford are great in it. You'd think they were old friends, they have great chemistry. I am hearby calling for a Emmy nomination for Judd Hirsch next year, for his Howard Beale-like rant alone, even if hes never on the show again. I can't wait to see what this show does. Shark: James Woods is a defense attorney turned prosecutor. James Woods is one of my favorite actors, and I think he carries a strong screen presence. I am already looking forward to next week. And its after CSI: Original Flava. I am also realistic and know some of these shows might not survive (Past shows I liked, including "The Handler" , and "Mds" didn't last the season, and in one case not past Halloween.) So out of the four shows I am going to try, I predict that "Heroes" will be replaced by extra episodes of "Deal or no deal" with "Hair or no hair" Howie Mandel before sweeps.

Even though it happened almost a week ago, I finished the Bill O'Reilly book "Those Who Trespass" . It's an all right book, it was a great antidote to sleeplessness too. I know cause I happened to fall asleep during a chapter or so. That has happened when I read good books too, though, so its hard to take that into account. Anyway Bill-O apparently went to the "cliches for your book" store before writing, cause a lot of them are here. The pretty girl, the guy who may the be the killer, the rugged cop who is in love with pretty girl etc. I won't go on. Its very understandable why he never wrote another book, the first one is very unmemorable. Chances of this becoming a movie? 15%, not very. I've moved on to other books, all of which will be the antidote to this thing. Its been donated to the library. It occurs to me I haven't seen a movie in the theater since "Snakes on a plane" . This will be corrected soon. Saturday, 9 September 2006
Progress report: I've read halfway through the Bill O'Reilly book. Its not bad, but hes never written another fiction novel so I imagine when it first came out it didn't do well. I will admit to skipping four pages, which contained two love scenes. There is something about reading a love scene written by O'Reilly that turns you off food for a while. Will finish book soon, I have a lot of other books to read. O'Reillys book is destined to be donated to the library. Yes, I am sharing the "lurve". I am half tempted to dream up a "fantasy cast list" for the movie version of the book, but I doubt a movie version is forth coming. PS: No falafels or loofas were injured in the first half of "Those Who Trespass". Snakes on a plane:I forgot to post my review of this movie. It's good campy fun. If you want a fun night at the movies, see Snakes on a place. Its not going to win an oscar, but its a good way to spend an hour or so. Watch out for snakes! (A cookie to those who got that reference. )

The Emmys were good. I think musical numbers should be ixnayed in the future, but overall Conan did a good job. A lot of the things he did were good, course half of them will be forgotten, along with who won Emmys, by next month. I can't wait to see who does it next year. The following is my predictions for who would win, and how accurate it was. Long story, short version: I didn't do so good. The first number is what I get right, the second what I get wrong. Keep in mind this is only the acting related awards. Drama Series: Nancy score: 0-1 Comedy Series: Nancy score: 0-2 Miniseries: Nancy score: 0-3 Made-for-TV Movie: Nancy score: 0-4 Variety, Music or Comedy Series: Nancy Score: 1-4 Actor, Drama Series: Nancy Score: 2-4 Actress, Drama Series: Nancy Score: 3-4
Nancy Score: 3-5
Nancy Score: 3-6
Nancy Score: 4-6
Nancy Score: 7-6
Nancy Score: 7-7....tie is back!
Nancy Score: 8-7 Supporting Actor, Miniseries or a Movie: Denis Lawson, "Bleak House (Masterpiece Theatre)," PBS; Hugh Dancy, "Elizabeth I," HBO; Jeremy Irons, "Elizabeth I," HBO; Robert Carlyle, "Human Trafficking," Lifetime; Clifton Collins Jr., "Thief," FX Network. Nancy Score: 8-8
Nancy Score: 8-9 In the end picture I got a little over half wrong. Not bad, since I haven't seen much of these movies or shows. When they do come to DVD I have no excuse to check them out. Next up, the Golden Globes!

The Emmy Awards are on this weekend, Sunday actually, on NBC eight pm eastern. Conan O'Brien is your host. He did a wonderful job the last time he hosted, so I'm expecting good times this year. Like everyone cool will be doing this week, I am putting out who I think will win, and who I want to win. Caveat Emptor - A warning if you will. Most newspaper predictions will be done by people who've seen at least 99% of the nominees. Maybe more. I will admitt to not seeing many of the nominees and I have reasons, many valid reasons. Reason one: Some shows are on HBO. Except for The Sopranos, I've not see many of the HBO nominees. So why do a list at all? Its an easy blog, to tell you the truth. And eveyone else will be doing the same, except not in blog form. My track record stinks, so if I'm wrong, we'll do the sensible thing...and blame the Emmy voters. Just kidding.

Today is my birthday and yup, that number in the title above is correct, I am of a certain age. They say you are as young as you feel, and I feel pretty darn good. I'm waiting for this "maturity" thing to kick in...any second now. In that meanwhile, here are some quotes about getting old. I promise a review of "Snakes on a plane" tomorrow.
Coco Chanel: Norman Vincent Peale: Elizabeth Barrett Browning Oscar Wilde: Dorothy Canfield Fisher Bob Hope Gracie Allen Friday, 18 August 2006
If you remember when Mel Gibson got busted for DWI (and other things) it was mentioned somewhere (too lazy to look) that Mel-o had plans to make a book into a movie. The book is called "Those who Trespass" by Bill O'Reilly.
Yup Bill O'Reilly. This guy.
I never knew such a book existed and I know about one other person who has read it. I had read BO'RS stuff before and somewhat agreed with him. Course I don't recall what it was that I agreed with and I gave away the books to the library so I'm not going to look it up. I never thought I would find this book, so I didn't even think I would ever read it. At this point, the book becoming a movie is kinda iffy. But then something happened, I found the book. I got it at a local yard sale for fifty cents. (so like Paris Hilton, Bill-o is cheap). I could not resist this purchase. In the coming weeks or months (however long it takes me) I've decided to read the book and post my thoughts on it when I'm done. I'm at chapter five now. (ok it took me a month to read two pages and a half hour to read four). A friend of mine advised its easier to read if you forget who the author is, and it is, Bill-os picture does not appear on the book. Thank god for small favors. When I finish the book I will review it. As Keith Olbermann might say, Mr O'Reilly is good at fiction. Lets see if this is true. I think this is the first and last fiction book (that is if you don't count the other books he wrote, ha!) he ever wrote.

The Ron Clark Story was a good movie. Matthew Perry did an wonderful job in it. I normally don't watch the TNT Johnson & Johnson movies, but I checked this one out. I was glad I did. My only complaint was that it was pretty much the same "good teacher gets students inspired to learn" story, but then again it wouldn't be a good story if it had a "they all failed" ending, would it? Anyway in a few weeks "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" will be on I'll be watching it. Hopefully this and the Ron Clark movie will have the US seeing Mr Perry as something other than Chandler Bing.

As you may or may not know this blog is also linked to my Matthew Perry website, the CitizenNancy Matthew Perry Scrapbook. It took roughly forty entries but now I have one about Mr Perry. On TNT this weekend a movie he stars in, the Ron Clark Story, will be on at 8 PM eastern (check your own listings for time and channel in your area) This is an incredible looking movie and I thought I would be a bit lacking if i didn't use this space to promote it. Its based on the true story of Ron Clark, a teacher. I promise a blog, if not that night then at least the night after on what I think. My MP site is at this address: https://members.tripod.com/~citizennancy/

This weekend I went to a monster truck/racing event. I do not go to a lot of these races. In fact the last time I went to a race the movie City Slickers was in theaters. I only know that cause the race got rained out and we went to see that movie. But since then I haven't gone to a race even though there a handful of race tracks near me. I do not go because... a) It's noisy. One thing you forget when you see it on tv is that you don't hear the cars. It's a blessing. b) Its hard to pay attention to when everyone and their brother is walking in front of you to get to the concession stand. If you are looking at some guy with a shirt off (who really needs to wear a shirt) sometimes you miss the action or the crash. c) There are insects, and lots of them. I saw a dragonfly that looked like a small black helicopter. d) At my old job I used to be at work during the same time the races were being held. Yeah, I could ask for a night off, but you see how motivated I was: not very. So yeah, I kinda let my "Redneck" side show when I went to the races. There were more races than monster truck orientated stuff at the event. I guess I'm more of a fan of "smashy smashy" than racing anyway. The following picture proved to be too big for my blog, but its one of the monster trucks named "Thrasher". This is the link to the picture. Let me know if you can't see it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/citizennancy/000_0156(.)jpg At this race there were three monster trucks. All three of them failed to completely total a red minivan, so if you want an indusctructible car, get a mini van. The position of the mini-van, in the middle of one pile, might have worked against the monster trucks.
